A deep dive into what makes us tick and what we've learned over the last 13 years...

Minecraft Survival can be tricky, especially if you are still new to the world of Minecraft. Here are 13 Minecraft Survival Tips to help you excel at the game.

Be careful where you dig
Digging underground in Minecraft is always risky as it can expose lava or mine-shafts. The worse thing to do is dig directly down. Instead, use staircases in order to avoid any digging dangers. If you suddenly find yourself faced with lava, you can quickly stop the flow by using blocks such as cobblestone.

Find yourself some obsidian
If you want to reach the Nether quickly, obsidian is the best way so make sure you collect it as quick as possible. You can still build a portal even without a pickaxe.

Breed cows over pigs
If you must choose between cows and pigs, choose cows. Although they both yield meat, cows will also yield milk and leather making them more beneficial to you and your crafting journey.

Don’t just burn coal
Although coal is the obvious choice, it is not the only fuel source available. Planks and sticks among other things can all be burned in a furnace.

Follow the sun and moon if you get lost
Always be aware of where the sun and moon are. This is especially useful when you are in an unfamiliar location. No matter what biome you are in, the sun and moon will rise in the East and Set in the West. Use this trick to always know which direction you are travelling.

Always be on the lookout for mobs
Stay vigilant. Each mob can be defeated in a slightly different fighting style. Try to get to grips with these styles as soon as you can. You can also defeat a lot of mobs by using cacti or lava, so bear that in mind. It is extremely easy for mobs to sneak up on you. Although some mobs have audio cues to hint they are nearby (for example Creeper’s hiss). Just in case, look around regularly to ensure you have no mobs closing in on you.

Craft several items at a time
You are not limited to crafting one thing at a time. It is possible to build several tools in one go which is a great time saver.

Collect Torches
Torches are something you should try and obtain early on and have as many as possible. You never know when you are going to be in a situation where torches will be necessary, especially if you find yourself in a cave. They light up areas in an instant and they can also break down sand and gravel meaning you don’t have to use a shovel. You also don’t know when you will run out, so ensure you have a good stock level.

Don’t try to do too much
Don’t try to do too much by running or jumping, your hunger levels can increase rapidly. You will then have the additional challenge of finding more food to carry on working which wastes precious time and resources.

Stay away from skeletons
Although there are several mobs you should be wary of, the skeletons can cause the most problems, so try and avoid these wherever possible when you first start off in survival mode. Skeletons are extremely accurate and can kill you quickly so when you see one, run.

Get experience points
If you want to progress and begin enchanting, you will need experience. You can gain this experience through mobs, breeding and mining certain materials such as coal, emerald and nether quartz.

Always keep an eye on your equipment
Always ensure you have basic equipment in your inventory, you will get to know quickly what essentials you need. Having these in your inventory will give you peace of mind and means you don’t have to return home to restock as often. You can also have “too much” when it comes to useful resources.

Stay above ground whenever possible
The last of our Minecraft Survival tips is to stay above ground if possible. Although you will still be threatened by mobs above ground, what lies beneath in the catacombs can bring even more challenges. These are best to be avoided until you become more familiar with survival mode.

Hopefully, these Minecraft survival tips will help you get to grips with survival mode quickly and allow you to progress further.
